Committee Member Profile: Lee Macaskill, Rumah - 5th Dec 2018

Today's post is the first in a series of profiles. The Mosgiel Business Association is driven by a dedicated committee, many of who may be familiar faces behind shop counters, on the streets or in the supermarket. But who are they?

First up, let's meet MBA Committee Member Lee Macaskill, part owner of Rumah.

How (or why) did you get into what you do?

Having completed a long career as an insurance broker, my wife Tracey and I travelled for some time, during which we hatched the idea, while holidaying in Indonesia, of importing and retailing furniture and homewares in our home town.

What is your connection to Mosgiel?

Born and bred, educated and still live here.

If I ran into you while out and about in Mosgiel, it would probably be at… Rumah, the golf club or at a social gathering.

What's been a challenge you've overcome, or an epiphany you've had, that's shaped who you are today?

Having spent many years in the corporate world, I exposed myself to the pressures and stress of the job and it has been good to take the pace of a bit and create a working life that suits my lifestyle and gives me some balance. I’ve gained perspective.

Mosgiel's Christmas Tree is ready for the holidays! - 27th Nov 2018

Last Sunday heralded the beginning of 'that most wonderful time of the year', as the Mosgiel Business Association brought some Christmas cheer to ANZAC Park.

It's up just in time to be the perfect backdrop for some Christmas carols, being held at the park on the Mosgiel Xmas Shopping Night this Thursday.

Our Christmas Tree was up and decorated in record time, thanks to a large group of keen volunteers who braved the drizzly morning to assist Mitchell's Transport to lift the tree into place on top of the container.

It's a real team effort brining some Christmas magic to Mosgiel, with the container arriving a few days before courtesy of a special sleigh, driven by Fairfield Transport.

A huge thank you to everyone involved: John, Ben, Grant, Evan, Donald, Shoz, Lee, Clinton, Amanda... and a large group of unidentified smaller people who denied being elves but look suspiciously like friends of Mr S. Claus.

Run the Runway challenge - 15th Jan 2018

Mosgiel asked to splash out for the pool - 12th Dec 2017

The Mosgiel Business Association has teamed up with the Festival of the Plain to announce the addition of a new deluxe event within the festival for 2018, with profits to go to the new aquatic centre fund.

Champagne, canapes and a lavish meal will be on offer at the Black-Tie Dinner and Dance. This is to be held at the historic Burns Lodge and will include a silent auction, guest speakers and live entertainment.

Mosgiel Business Association Chairman and manager of Burns Lodge Clinton Chambers said: “The most effective way to cope with change is to help create it, all businesses in Mosgiel are in support for the pool as it brings job opportunities and growth to our region, this is opportunity for us to get behind this vision and do it in style”.

Tickets are $130 per person with all profits to be donated to the pool project.

With only 100 seats available, it will be an exclusive event and expected to sell out.

Kristy Compton, coordinator of this event said: “Mosgiel is now a big enough community in its own right to host an event like this. People should not have to head over the hill to Dunedin Central to dress up and step out in style. It will be a fun night for a cause we all want to see come to fruition”.

The event will be held on Saturday 24th February 2018.
